The Darktrace 2021 Annual Report is a glossy design document, containing the companies maiden annual report and financial statements, for the 2020 - 2021 financial year. The document was distributed digital via Darktrace’s Investor Website, and via print based version to majority share owners. The physical version is available to the public on request.
The layout of the document needed to be dynamic pulling double duty as a physical and digital document. Elements of the document were tailored to work around the physical limitations of print. The document was designed to work as double page spreads with a conservative margin in the centre, which was optimised for minimal data loss on the print version central pinch. The page layout of the document operated on a 3 to 4 column grid. This allowed elements to flow without breaking the structure of the document. Tables were designed to be easily broken across multiple pages if need be, this was heavily utilised in the ‘Financial Statements’ section of the report.
Any data which could be displayed graphically, was translated into infographics. This covered the financial figures, company story, and investment models. The financial infographics were limited in what they could represent, since this was Darktrace’s maiden annual report, only a years worth of data was present in the document. The challenge was to highlight the growth areas and potential changes which might be seen over the next financial year. Complex investment models such as TAM (Total Addressable Market) needed to be included, and visualised in easy to digest formats for the reader.
Interactivity was utilised across the document for quick navigation, and to aid the reader with referencing where policies were mentioned. Quick navigation for the contents pages for each chapter is included at the top of every spread. Clicking on these tabs will take the reader to the contents page of each chapter, which is then in turn linked to each of the major sections within the chapter.
